bwHPC-S5 (and between 2013 until 2018 the predecessor bwHPC-C5) acts as an "interface" between scientists and Baden-Württemberg's HPC systems. An unified statewide user support is coordinated federatively. The establishment of HPC competence centers unites technical experts and field specialists. In this way, scientific communities are bound closer to Baden-Württemberg's HPC systems which become increasingly visible.
In regard to technical implementation,bwHPC-S5 raises the federated service management to another level: federated services of other Baden-Württemberg initiatives (such as bwIDM and bwLSDF) will be embedded and completed by new developments of administration tools and the standardization of cluster operations at the different locations.
Innovative HPC technologies as HPC virtualization, accelerator systems and energy efficient computing will be tested and evaluated in collaboration with HPC users to coordinate migration strategies.
To address a wide range of users, particular attention is paid to the dissemination of project activities.
