bwHPC: High Performance Computing in Baden-Württemberg

The aims are the provision of a state-wide HPC infrastructure, the coordination of federated support for users of high performance computing in the state of Baden-Württemberg and the implementation of all its related measures and activities.

This happens particularly by the project bwHPC-S5 which is part of the current implementation concept for HPC, DIC and LS2DM in Baden-Württemberg. bwHPC-S5 has been funded by the ministry of science, research and arts of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany. The Universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg, Hohenheim, Konstanz, Mannheim, Stuttgart, Tübingen and Ulm, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, as well as the Universities of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart and Esslingen participate in the realization of the project.

Project's phase 1 is running for 30 months, i.e., 01 Jul 2018 until 31 Dec 2020.

Science successfully united: bwHPC Symposium and ZKI AK Supercomputing in Freiburg

The University of Freiburg organized the fifth bwHPC Symposium on 26th and 27th September 2018. While on the first day interesting lectures by researchers gave an impression of the different purposes for which they use the "High Performance Computing" offer in the country, the second day was devoted to the development with the start of the project bwHPC-S5 ("Scientific Simulation and Storage Support Services"). Afterwards the ZKI AK Supercomputing took place. The working group offers a forum for the exchange of experiences for all who are interested in the procurement and operation as well as in the use of high performance computers or computer clusters in science. The opening speech was held by Prof. Dr. Gunther Neuhaus, Vice Rector and Prorector for Research at the University of Freiburg. Afterwards Peter Castellaz, head of the department of the Ministry of Science, Research and Art Baden Württemberg (MWK), gave a short speech to welcome all participants. In the following, renowned scientists provided a varied program with interesting lectures. Part of the symposium was also a poster session. During the breaks, the participants were able to discuss about 20 posters. The posters presented very different topics, from the structure of the bwHPC project, over resource description, up to concrete scientific results in the individual fields. The fifth bwHPC symposium has achieved its goal - it also served as a place of exchange between the data centers and the users, bridging the gap between the basic infrastructure and the operational tasks. The symposium takes place annually in autumn at one of the institutions involved in bwHPC and was held in previous years at the University of Tübingen (2017), the University of Heidelberg (2016), the University of Ulm (2015) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (2014). Next year, the bwHPC Symposium will take place at the University of Mannheim.

Jul 31, 2018: Successful participation in this year's ISC High Performance Conference for bwHPC

bwHPC reports three very successful trade fair days at this year's International Supercomputing Conference (ISC), which took place from 24 to 28 June 2018 in Frankfurt/Main. Also this year more than 3500 guests from more than 60 countries visited the event and set a new visitor record. bwHPC presented at booth A-1321 innovative developments and findings around HPC in the state of Baden-Württemberg. As a further highlight, the bwCloud project (https://www.bw-cloud.org) presented progressive project results. "With our cross-university HPC competence centres in Baden-Württemberg and the five high-performance computers at the state universities of Freiburg, Heidelberg/Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Tübingen and Ulm, we offer scientists not only application-specific HPC solutions but also expertise for user support in proven scientific fields", Robert Barthel - bwHPC project manager - draws a consistently positive conclusion. bwHPC would like to thank all visitors, customers and partners for the numerous interesting discussions. At the next International Supercomputing Conference from 16 to 20 June 2019 in Frankfurt/Main (https://www.isc-hpc.com), bwHPC will again be represented as an exhibitor at Booth #B-1223.

Apr 13, 2018: Call for Participation in the 5th bwHPC Symposium

On behalf of the bwHPC initiative (www.bwhpc.de) we invite you to participate in the upcoming 5th bwHPC symposium on September 24/25, 2018 hosted at the University of Freiburg. The symposium provides the opportunity to present scientific projects, results or methods that have been carried out, achieved or developed with the support of bwHPC high performance computing resources. The symposium is free of charge and open to researchers from all disciplines. Participation from outside Baden-Württemberg is explicitly encouraged. We would kindly ask to respect the deadlines for submissions to the conference. In particular, for a short paper contribution (1000-6000 words), the respective deadline is 03.06.2018. For registration, submission of contributions and further details, please visit the following website:
